Swallowing, eating and nutrition

9) Special diets

We should all be trying to reduce salt, fat, alcohol and sugar in our diets and increase the fiber, fruit and vegetables to stay healthy.

Some people will be advised to remain on special diets when they go home.

The hospital dietitian will be able to advise you. They may also have leaflets or handouts for you to read at home. Check with your doctor or dietitian before discharge from hospital or if you are at home ask for advice at your GP surgery or for referral to community dietitian on any of the following diets:

  • Low salt.
  • Low fat.
  • Artificial feeding via Nasogastric tube or PEG tube.
  • Puree diet.
  • Soft diet.
  • Mince/mashed diet.
  • Thickened fluids.
  • Diabetic diet.
  • High protein diet.
