Swallowing, eating and nutrition

2) Swallowing assessment

The following film clip shows how a nurse would check a stroke patients ability to swallow safely. This test is important because if the swallow has been affected by a stroke food and drinks can enter the lung rather than the stomach. This can lead to serious complications. Please note carers are not expected to do this assessment. It should only be done by a trained nurse or therapist.

Video running time: 04.20 minutes. The film may take time to download depending on your broadband speed.
