7) Legal Aid

Legal aid is available if you are on low income and receive benefits. Legal aid can help with advice and assistance or with civil legal cases.

Advice and assistance may help to settle disputes without going to court. Some examples of civil legal cases are:

  • Welfare of children
  • Compensation or medical negligence
  • Housing issues such as arrears, repairs or eviction
  • Debts

There are rules, conditions and fees for claiming legal aid which are set in legislation by the Scottish Parliament.
For more information or to check if you are eligible to claim legal aid – contact Scottish Legal Aid Board on 0131 226 7061.  You can also get details of local solicitors or order information leaflets

Free advice is available from Citizens Advice Scotland
