Norman has had three strokes over a period of 9 years and has significant communication problems because of his aphasia. However he and Nancy do communicate by using pictures, gestures and their sense of humour. They also use a conversation support book.<\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Last year, up to last year er&#8230; we used to go up to Glenrothes pool and Norman swam with er&#8230;\u201d \u201cWith the, what did you use?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman: (<em>Gestures using a snorkel and face mask<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSnorkel, snorkel and the flippers.\u201d \u201cGot round that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhen did we last go to the beach holiday?\u201d \u201cI think it was the year before you took the stroke.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman: (<em>Nods in agreement<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd who did we go with again?\u201d \u201cCan you remember?\u201d \u201cNo, Tommy and Jeanette from the caravan.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAye\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd we also went golfing holidays with them to Spain.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAye\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWho won?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(<em>Points to himself<\/em>) \u201cMe\u201d (<em>Laughing<\/em>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201dWho kept losing the ball?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>(<em>Whispers <\/em>\u201cTommy\u201d <em>Still laughing<\/em>)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cTommy\u201d (More laughing)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman: (<em>Points to the communication support book to the picture of the dentist<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat\u2019s this?\u201d \u201cOh, the dentist.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman: (<em>Gestures- Puts his hand to hold the side of his cheek<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cOh you\u2019ve had terrible toothache, haven\u2019t you?\u201d \u201cThree times, three weeks in a row we were at the dentist and unfortunately it\u2019s up in Broughty Ferry, about an hour\u2019s journey away.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cAnd last week, two weeks ago now.\u201d \u201cYou got the dentist on Thursday this week.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman: <em>Nods in agreement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAnd he took your root, not your root, your nerve out the last time.\u201d \u201cYour last visit.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ve been OK this week haven\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Norman: <em>Nods<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nancy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cLast two weeks you\u2019ve been in a lot of pain, but better this week.\u201d \u201cGood\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Norman has aphasia with very limited speech.
